WHOA! The 6 sentence summary above doesn’t do this book justice. I found this little treasure this morning when I was surfing while eating my breakfast. The cover was what actually got my attention. It looked to me like it was the two sides of a person and I thought it would be a cool read. I managed to get my grubby little hands on a copy of the audiobook. SCORE! Listening while I drive to work is awesome and helps pass the time when I am stuck in traffic and maybe even listening while at work to make the day go faster. The hour drive this morning flew by as I was pulled quite willingly into Ms. DeCosta’s fantasy world. It has been a while since a book has hooked me so completely that even at work I put up my Do Not Disturb sign just so I can finish listening to the new jewel I had found. I will try not to spoil and only give you enough details to hook you too but I am ready to find some others to chat with about this book so forgive me if I go on and on.
First off! I wanted to congratulate narrator Hollie Jackson her reading of Beyond the Veil was amazing. The feeling and depth that she put into the characters brought all of Ms. DeCosta’s characters to life as I was rushed along with the story on this roller coaster ride. Then I wanted to dash into dinner parties and flip the tables over just because it would be fun. (Read it or Listen you will understand!) At one point I even speeded up the reading speed in my audible app just to see if I could listen faster. Bonus for Ms. Jackson I will have to also search to see what else she has narrated. *added to my to do list*
The story . . . Muse . . . Akil . . . Stefan . . . Goodness . . . I can’t figure out where to start!! *Breathe Robin* Okay I got this.
Charlotte “Charlie” Henderson AKA Muse is one half elemental demon and one-half human enslaved and mistreated since birth. She embodies magic and chaos and was sold as other half-breeds are if they were not outright killed just for being born. Muse is beautifully broken and you can FEEL it through the words that Ms. DeCosta has written. I could feel how much suffering and pain that Muse was struggling to live with daily in her hidden life. In this story, you learn quickly that when blue eyed blonde haired trouble walks thru your workshop’s door life will never be the same.

Stefan or Mr. Asshole as he is referred to sometimes has as snow spirit demon mother and a father that was human I will plead the fifth on him as I am not quite sure yet on where he stands. Another half-breed who was trained as an assassin and reeks of mischief, sarcastic wit and arrogance . . . oh how charming . . . Yes he is! His blue eyes and dash of bad boy looks just make you want to grab ahold and hold on for the ride! I laughed every time he said, “Flick the safety off.”
The next main hottie you are introduced to is Akil Vitalis, one of the 7 Princes of Hell. The Prince of Greed . . . Mannon. . . ageless, powerful, the dark side of Muse. . . is he lost in the darkness or was he always on this path. I would love to hear everyone else’s opinions on Mannon too.
This story is beautifully written with well thought out characters that make you just want to crawl into this book to sit on the couch in the room these characters are in with a bowl of popcorn and watch the sparks fly. The plot and flow of the story are well paced and you don’t have to deal with a lot of boring info dumps like some writers like to do. Ms. DeCosta likes to leave you a little trail of ice wing feathers too quickly gather up to keep you hot on the trail. (Another teaser there read to find out why!) The ending . . . I just can’t go there yet I am still recovering . . . there were SO many wonderful holy crap moments I didn’t see that one coming in this book and coming from someone who reads a lot that is sometimes hard to do.
I will not spoil this so you have to read to find out this roller coaster turns out! But I will warn you in this story, everyone is keeping secrets from everyone and you are on the edge of your seat with every twist, turn and heart drop it is so impossible to tell who is on Muse’s side. This book has left me quickly searching for the more of this beautiful series. And lucky for me there are 4 more books and a prequel already written!
I highly recommend this book and I might write some more reviews on the rest of the series as soon as I can! Then add Pippa DaCosta to your authors to watch list as I will be doing!
