SYNOPSIS:

It has only been a few months since humanity has found out about the shifters that live in their midst. When the New Alliance leadership asks Eric King to join Alpha Squad, a joint taskforce supposed to promote cooperation between the shifters and human authorities, his loyalty to the cause doesn’t give him any choice but to agree. But is the squad actually supposed to be relevant, or is it just an eyewash, set up by the new Secretary for Shifter Affairs to make himself look good? And how is he going to concentrate on his training, when his inner bear is insisting that the squad leader is his true mate?

Major Janine Williams is not at all pleased when she is ordered to set up Alpha Squad. The initiative is just a gimmick, meant to pacify the shifter community, plus none of her male colleagues had wanted the job. But when she starts getting to know her team, especially tough East London bear shifter, Eric, she starts to wonder if perhaps it will be possible to make this task force a success, so long as everyone works together. And so long as she can manage to keep her relationship with Eric strictly professional.

Robin’s Thoughts

Alpha Squad:Boot Camp by Lorelei Moone is not the first book that I have read by Ms. Moone and I was looking forward to the exciting style that Ms. Moone uses.  And as this one was an Audiobook I could not even claim I had housework to do. This was a fun, relaxing listen and I found myself laughing along quite a bit. Don’t let the cover fool you this is a different kind of boot camp.

Narrator Audrey Lusk did a fine job with keeps character voices straight not taking away form the story at all and keeping the flow of the story at a strong steady pace.  Kudos to you Ms. Lusk.

In this story it starts in the awkward time as shifters have been outed and the humans are aware of their presence now.  As with any other minority some countries accept and some don’t.  Eric, our bear shifter hero, gets asked to go to alpha squad boot camp and is stunned when he enters and is knocked off his axis for commanding officer Major Janine Williams.  There is a lot of places where the story could have taken turns for the worse but you can see that Ms. Moone has a plan on where she is going. There is a lot going on that you have to pay close attentions to as some plots are revealed quickly and right on top of each other.

Major Janine Williams is stuck between a rock and a hard place as she has orders to do one thing and finds her conscious taking her on another path.  While she is hearing a male voice in her head anytime she is around Eric she begins to find her path and you will cheer along as decisions and plans are made. *I don’t want to spoil it!*

The only complaint I had about the book was that it didn’t have enough action.  When I think of shifter romances I am usually waiting for the huge fight scene and I don’t know if this will be expanding in future stories or not with this book or if this was it. I wonder as a military brat myself how the “military” part of the story will continue to play out if there are future books.

This story is a wonderful intro in what could be an exciting series as Ms. Moone lays an excellent intro story.

4 Hearts!
